Kathy Mattea
| October 30 buy Join us for an unforgettable evening as Kathy Mattea takes the stage with hits from her latest album, Coal, inspired by the Sago, West Virginia Mine Disaster of 2006. This beloved, two-time Grammy®-winning singer of such classics as 18 Wheels and A Dozen Roses and Whereve You Been, has collected nearly a dozen songs about the human and environmental costs of coal mining in her native West Virginia. A champion of Al Gores An Inconvenient Truth, Mattea travels the country speaking to crowds about the importance of fighting global warming and the environmental and physical devastation of coal mining. With roots based in traditional Irish music, her energetic delivery captures the injustice, tragedy and pride known by miners and their kin, and effectively translates the experience for listeners whove never set foot in hill country. Stories of Coal from Grammy® Award Winning Singer, Kathy MatteaOctober 30 @ 1:30 PM
A champion of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, Kathy Mattea travels the country speaking about the importance of fighting global warming and the environmental and physical devastation of coal mining. This program relates to the 2010-11 University-wide theme “Year of Water” through its focus on environmentalism with attention to the effect of the coal mining industry’s practice of mountain-top removal which poisons the waterways. Mapping the internal and external landscapes of her coal journey, Mattea will reflect on her process as an environmental and social justice advocate and musician, and suggest directions for the future.
