Dance Celebration Artist to Artist Master Class Series

Experience the opportunity to study contemporary dance from seven distinct perspectives. Discover new performance techniques and explore diverse methodologies with some of contemporary dance’s most celebrated performers and teachers. Meet the artists, gain new insights and engage in their technical prowess. All programs are free and open to the public. Advance registration is required to participate. Observers are welcome, space permitting. The Artist to Artist Master Class Series is one of the residency activities conducted by companies performing in the Dance Celebration 11/12 season.

11/12 Master Class Series

Chunky Move

Designed by artistic director Gideon Obarzanek and Chunky Move dancers, this workshop will explore the choreographic systems and exercises that make this troupe one of Australia’s most unique and sought after companies, known internationally for its technological investigations, unusual collaborations and athletic and agile dancers. Recommended for intermediate /advanced dancers.

Compagnie Marie Chouinard

Founder Marie Chouinard, a recipient of the Prix Denise Pelleter, Quebec’s highest government award, is praised as the “queen of the avant-garde.” She has developed a choreographic system based on the poetics of the body that is the inspiration for her works. Dancers will examine her approaches and aesthetics that have dominated world stages breaking boundaries and genres. Recommended for intermediate/advanced dancers.

RUBBERBANDance Group

Are you interested in the raw dynamics of hip hop and breakdance and the subtleties of classical and contemporary movement? Join choreographer Victor Quidaja and examine how he breaks down the barriers of these dance forms through a series of guided demonstrations, exercises and movement phrases. Dancers will experience RUBBERBANDance Group’s unique fusion of dance forms. Recommended for intermediate/advanced dancers.

Inbal Pinto & Avshalom Pollak Dance Company

Under the direction of brilliant Israeli collaborators Pinto and Pollak, this troupe of dancer-actors blends dance, theater, acrobatics and the circus arts into one stunning and unexpected visual feast. Participants will learn phrases from its touring work Oyster, a theater of marvels based on a shabby sideshow lauded for its wit, whimsy and unusual beauty. Recommended for intermediate/advanced dancers.

DanceBrazil

Under the direction of Jelon Vieira, DanceBrazil’s repertory mixes Afro-Brazilian, capoeira and contemporary dance. This class will focus on dances and movements developed from Brazil’s African roots such as the samba, Orixas dances (from the candomblé religion) and maculelé (a dance developed in the sugar cane fields performed with sticks). Dancers will delve into the roots and traditions that define DanceBrazil. Recommended for intermediate/advanced dancers.

Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal

Ever wondered how an internationally-prized repertory company trains to do the work by some of the world’s most eclectic and sought-after choreographers? This class offers a glimpse into the company’s practices. It will begin with a classical ballet barre followed by the opportunity to learn excerpts from the company’s current repertoire. Recommended for intermediate/advanced dancers.

MOMIX

This workshop will explore how MOMIX, known for its mad mix of magic, physicality and theatricality, mines materials. It will include a warm-up, guided improvisation and phrases from its world-acclaimed repertory. Bring your physicality and a sense of humor and be prepared for an adventure. Recommended for dancers, performers and adventurers.
